ING Speed Skating Challenge

It all started with a simple quest to find Canada's Best Speed Skating Story. What followed amazed even us. More than 40 video entries from virtually every corner of the country telling funny, heartwarming and inspirational tales arrived for judging. These were narrowed down to eight finalists, and then you took over by voting for your favourites. After more than 42,500 votes, we had our winner.

Canada’s Best Speed Skating Story

Taking a page from the movie, Field of Dreams, 17-year-old Alastair Starke of Lloydminster, Alberta created an oval on a frozen slough behind his family's farm. He didn't do it because voices told him to, but because his team needed a place to train for the upcoming Alberta Winter Games.

Runner Up

It seems only natural that a skater from the land of ice would be our other finalist. Nunavut's Sarah Ali, skates for the Iqaluit Speed Skating Association and her story gave us a glimpse into what it means to her to represent the North, and to be a role model for younger skaters.

Catriona’s Most Inspirational

With thousands of families involved at rinks stretching across the country we know that speed skating is a family sport. However, Winnipeg's Andrea Johnson was given special mention for her video that reminded us that sometimes our sport stretches across generations.
